Description:

Steps to create a XML file so that you can suppress the CA Vulnerability Manager caevms service on Windows and Non Windows assets.

Solution:

The VM caevms Service for Windows & Unix platforms allows the user to specify whether the Service runs on reboot.

The user specifies either or both options in a configuration file.

The configuration file must be created and the name must be ?configrules.xml?.

This feature provides the option of disabling the VM Service scan on reboot. The XML syntax is:

<preferences>
<disablebootscan />
</preferences>

Windows Notes:

If you make a change to the configrules.xml file you must use the Service Manager to stop and then start the VM Service to pick up the change in the configrules.xml file.

A reboot is equivalent to using the Service Manager Stop followed by Start or the Restart functions. So when you are using the disable reboot option if you use these Service Manager functions a scan will not be performed. You will see a message in the log file that says it has been disabled. To initiate a scan on the client machine under the suppress scan on reboot, the Pause function may be used.

Unix Notes:

If you edit the configrules.xml file you must use the daemon stop (/etc/init.d/caevms stop) and then daemon start (/etc/init.d/caevms start) command to pick up the change in the configrules.xml file.

A reboot is equivalent to the daemon start command (e.g. /etc/init.d/caevms start). So if you are using the disable reboot option when you run the /etc/init.d/caevms start command this will not run a scan. You will see a message in the log file that says it has been disabled. In order to initiate a scan the /opt/CA/eTrustVMS/bin/caevmsctl startscan command will have to be used .
