Introduction:

The CA IDMS ODBC Driver is installed as part of the CA IDMS Server installation  It is one of the components used at run-time to establish & maintain a connection to a CA IDMS mainframe from web-based or server-based applications. 

Question:

Are there any compatibility issues between Windows 8 or Windows 10 and CA IDMS Server r17? We will be upgrading from Windows 7 soon and would like to avoid any problems. 

Environment:
This question of compatibility can arise in any CA IDMS environment where web-based or server-based applications are implemented that access the IDMS data residing on the mainframe, from a WINDOWS platform.
Answer:

Starting in Windows 8 (and continuing into Windows 10) there are three problems or differences which may cause challenges for clients using the CA IDMS ODBC Driver.

The first difference is that the Windows Start Menu program was redesigned/ rewritten, eliminating the layering of sub-menus. These sub-menus are no longer being honored or displayed in the Start Menu. As a result, all of the shortcuts for both the 32 and 64 bit ODBC Driver items are lumped together underneath the 'CA' menu. This is very confusing for users who run with both versions of the CA IDMS ODBC driver, as users are unable to differentiate which shortcuts pertain to which bitwise version of the product.

To address this problem, this document provides a small script that can be run after the IDMS Server ODBC Drivers have been installed. The script is in the file attached to this document. It eliminates the layering of the IDMS Server folders under the 'CA' folder, and provides instead 2 new high-level menus named:

'CA IDMS Server r17 (32-bit)'

'CA IDMS Server r17 (64 bit)'

 

There are a few considerations in running this script:

1-   1- Users must have ‘Administrator’ authority in order to run the provided script. 

2-   2- The ‘Command Prompt’ program must be started under the ‘Administrator’ account. If this proves problematic, users can simply make the necessary changes manually using the Windows File Explorer program.

3-   3- The script is provided in a file with an extension of “.txt” in order to avoid any issues with email/ftp/network scanners. Before executing the script, the file should be downloaded to your work station and the extension changed from “.txt” to “.bat”.

4-   4- The script includes a reference to the folder  

     C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

This may not exist on your machine. If it doesn’t then you may need to change this to

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Administrative Tools .

 

The second behavioral change in the Start Menu function in Windows 8 & 10 was the elimination of all ‘System’ utility functions within User Menu folders.  As a result, the ODBC Administrator function can no longer be found under the ‘CA IDMS Server r17 (xx-bit)’ menus. Instead, both the 32 and 64 bit ODBC Administrators must now be invoked under the Windows -> Administrative Tools menu.

Lastly, users may find that the CA IDMS Server ODBC driver “Uninstall” function may not remove the Start Menu entries properly, owing to the new location of the menu items. These items can simply be deleted using Windows File Explorer, by deleting the ‘CA IDMS Server r17 (xx-bit)’ directories under “C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs”.
